Overview

The “Useful Links” plugin allows website administrators to add and manage a list of useful links directly from the WordPress dashboard. It also provides the ability to add custom free text above the links. The plugin displays these links and the free text in a convenient widget on the dashboard, providing quick access to important sites and resources.

Installation

  1. Download the plugin ZIP file.
  2. Log in to your WordPress admin panel.
  3. Navigate to “Plugins” > “Add New” > “Upload Plugin”.
  4. Choose the downloaded ZIP file and click “Install Now”.
  5. After installation, click “Activate Plugin”.

Using the Plugin

Adding Free Text

  1. In the WordPress admin panel, go to “Settings” > “Useful Links”.
  2. In the “Free Text” section, enter the text you want to display above the links.
  3. You can use multiple lines and basic formatting.
  4. Click “Save Changes” at the bottom of the page.
  1. On the “Useful Links Settings” page, scroll down to the “Links” section.
  2. Click the “Add Link” button.
  3. Enter the link name and URL in the provided fields.
  4. Click “Save Changes” at the bottom of the page.
  1. On the “Useful Links Settings” page, locate the link you want to edit.
  2. Modify the name or URL as needed.
  3. Click “Save Changes” to update the link.
  1. On the settings page, use the drag handle icon (three vertical dots) next to each link.
  2. Click and drag the link to the desired position in the list.
  3. The new order will be saved automatically.
  1. Next to the link you want to remove, click the “Remove” button.
  2. The link will be immediately removed from the list.
  3. Click “Save Changes” to confirm the removal.

After adding free text and links, they will automatically appear in the “Useful Links” widget on the main WordPress dashboard. The free text will be displayed above the links, separated by a horizontal line. Any user with access to the dashboard will be able to see and use these links.

Troubleshooting

  • Free text or links not appearing on the dashboard: Ensure you’ve added the text and at least one link in the settings page and clicked “Save Changes”.
  • Free text formatting issues: Make sure you’re not using complex HTML in the free text area. Basic line breaks are supported.
  • Unable to drag links: Try refreshing the page. If the issue persists, check for conflicts with other plugins.
  • Changes not saving: Make sure you click “Save Changes” after making any modifications.
